Cochlear Implants in Cambodia

Custom solutions to help you hear, loud and clear.

What are Cochlear Implants?

A small electronic device, a Cochlear ear implant is placed in the inner ear of people who are severely hard of hearing or completely deaf. A cochlear implant includes an external portion that sits behind the ear and a surgical implant.  It contains the following.

  • A mic to pick up sounds
  • Speech processor to distinguish speech from all sounds picked up by the mic
  • A transmitter/ receiver to convert these into electrical signals
  • An electrode array that sends these to the auditory nerve

While a hearing aid amplifies sound, a cochlear implant bypasses the damaged part of the ear and transmits sounds directly to the auditory nerve. The brain interprets this as hearing. Thus, it aids in sensorineural hearing loss treatment.

Who Can Benefit from Cochlear Implants?

Being the latest treatment for hearing loss, the Cochlear Hearing Aid (or Implant) is meant for people with severe hearing impairment or complete deafness. These include:

  • Moderately severe to profound deaf adults
  • Children who have severe to profound hearing loss

People who may get little to no benefit from hearing aids can relearn hearing with the help of a cochlear implant device.

However, if you or your loved one is already using hearing aids for severe hearing loss, you may upgrade to Bimodal hearing solutions (a combination of cochlear implant and hearing aid). This means that one of your ears is fitted with a hearing aid and the other with a cochlear implant.

Cochlear Implant: Types and Devices

Depending on the location of the external sound processors, types of cochlear implants include:

  • Behind the ear
  • Attached to clothes
  • Attached to scalp

Cochlear Implant Surgery Procedure

The surgical procedure involves making a small cut behind the ear to create an opening into the mastoid bone (the conical projection you can feel right behind your ear) to help guide the electrode to the cochlea (the snail-shaped inner ear cavity that is responsible for hearing). Once the electrodes have been implanted in the cochlea, the internal device is placed behind a muscle and the bone located at the back of the ear. These incisions made behind your ear are then closed by the surgeon. Further, the external speech processor is worn behind the ear.

Recovery from the surgery takes a few weeks. The time taken is for the incisions from cochlear implant surgery to heal. Once you have recovered, the device will be programmed. During this time, you cannot use a hearing aid.

After undergoing the surgical process, the cochlear implant success rate is greater than 99.8%.
